San Angelo Animal Shelter Eases Intake Rules as Stray Dog Numbers Rise

SAN ANGELO, TX – In an effort to reduce the number of stray dogs on city streets, the San Angelo Animal Shelter has lifted intake restrictions for residents, city officials announced Thursday.

The policy change aims to improve public safety and provide shelter for loose dogs.

Despite the increased intake, the shelter will continue operating under its capacity limits of 180 dogs and 120 cats to ensure adequate care. The shelter’s euthanasia list will also remain in place, with the next scheduled deadline on March 1.

City officials also addressed a social media rumor claiming the shelter euthanized 45 dogs on Tuesday.

According to the city, the shelter euthanized 15 dogs that day—one for medical reasons and 14 due to aggression concerns.

The shelter will accept animal surrenders from San Angelo residents only, with drop-off hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding city holidays.

Residents who find stray animals are encouraged to bring them to the shelter, reach out to local rescues, or participate in the Good Samaritan program, which allows for temporary foster care until placement is arranged.

Officials urge the public to help prevent euthanasia by advocating, fostering, or adopting shelter pets.
