Five Candidates in Race for San Angelo Mayor as Filing Deadline Nears

SAN ANGELO, TX — With the deadline to file for San Angelo’s upcoming general election approaching, five candidates have entered the race for mayor.

The filing period, which began on Jan. 15, will close on Feb. 14, leaving candidates with limited time to submit their paperwork.

The latest addition to the mayoral race is Carlos Hernandez, who filed on Monday, Feb. 10. He joins Gary Jenkins, Tom Thompson, Joshua Burleson, and Juan Acevedo on the ballot for the May 3 election.

In addition to the mayoral race, other positions up for election include single-member district 2, district 4, and district 6 council seats.

As of now, John Bariou and Joe M. Self Jr. have filed for the district 2 seat, while Larry Miller is running for re-election in district 6. The city has not released information on candidates for the district 4 position, which has been held by Lucy Gonzales since 2015.

The current officeholders for the contested positions are Mayor Brenda Gunter, District 2 Councilmember Tom Thompson, District 4 Councilmember Lucy Gonzales, and District 6 Councilmember Larry Miller.

Candidate packets are available online at cosatx.us/elections, and physical copies can be obtained at City Hall, 72 W. College Ave., in Room 204.

The City Clerk’s office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for candidates to submit paperwork before the deadline.
