San Angelo to Break Ground on Youth Sports Practice Area Renovation

SAN ANGELO, TX — The City of San Angelo will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation of the Youth Sports Practice Area, formerly the 29th Street Sports Complex, at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, at 2929 Riverside Golf Club Road.

The complex, originally developed in the 1970s, has served as a home for the San Angelo Girls Fast Pitch Association and Northern Little League.

Despite a 2010 sales tax referendum allocating funds for a new facility, the project was never completed. Increased demand for practice space has now made the renovation a priority.

Planned upgrades include:

  • Rehabilitation of the main baseball field
  • Installation of prefabricated restrooms
  • Creation of a new practice area along the river
  • Construction of a pedestrian bridge to Kirby Park, pending Army Corps of Engineers approval
  • Enhancements to bleachers, walking trails, irrigation, and parking

The renovation’s final cost is $1.461 million, within the approved $1.5 million budget, not including the pedestrian bridge. City officials are working to secure approval and additional funding for the bridge if necessary.
