SAN ANGELO, TX — Temperatures are expected to rise this weekend, with record-breaking highs possible in San Angelo and Abilene, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say temperatures will resemble late spring rather than winter, with the warmest day expected on Monday.
In Abilene, Saturday’s high is forecast at 76 degrees, well below the 1911 record of 89 degrees. However, Sunday and Monday could set new records, with forecast highs of 82 and 87 degrees. The chance of tying or breaking the record is 73% on Sunday and 94% on Monday.
San Angelo faces a similar trend, with highs reaching 75 degrees on Saturday, 81 on Sunday, and 85 on Monday. Sunday has a 49% chance of breaking the record, while Monday’s forecast has a 92% chance of surpassing the previous record of 82 degrees set in 2021.
The warm spell is accompanied by breezy south-southwest winds between 10 to 15 mph. Meteorologists note that temperatures are running 10 to 15 degrees above normal for early February.
Despite the warmth, rainfall remains scarce. January totals show San Angelo received 0.72 inches of rain, slightly below the 0.92-inch average. Abilene recorded 0.89 inches, also below the normal 1.10 inches for the month. While most of West Central Texas saw below-average precipitation, areas like Brady, Mason, and San Saba reported above-average rainfall.
The warm temperatures are expected to persist into early next week before a potential cooldown.
