Odessa Police Shoot Hammer-Wielding Man During Disturbance Call

ODESSA, TX — A man armed with a hammer was shot by police Thursday morning after charging at officers during a disturbance call, according to the Odessa Police Department.

This happened around 10 a.m. at 950 W. 31st St., where officers responded to reports of a man attempting to force entry into an apartment. Police said the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Benjamin Fiedler, was uncooperative. Officers attempted to subdue him with a taser, but it was ineffective.

As Fiedler allegedly charged at the officers, one officer fired a single shot, striking him in the abdomen. He was transported to Medical Center Hospital by Odessa Fire and Rescue.

The Texas Rangers have taken over the investigation, as is standard in officer-involved shootings. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending further review.
