SAN ANGELO, TX – An Arctic cold front is set to bring extended sub-freezing temperatures to West Texas starting late Friday, with highs dropping sharply from near 70°F on Friday to the 30s by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in San Angelo.
Temperatures in San Angelo will reach a high of 70°F Friday before the cold front arrives overnight. By Saturday, the high will reach 53°F in San Angelo, with a low of 23°F expected overnight. Sunday will be colder still, with a high of just 39 °F.
Extended freezing temperatures are expected through early next week, with many areas, including Ballinger, Brady, and Junction, seeing lows in the teens. Ballinger could hit 16°F early next week, while areas like Haskell may drop as low as 13°F.
For now, conditions remain mild, with highs in the mid-50s to low 60s today under mostly sunny skies. Winds will shift to the north at 5–10 mph, becoming calm by evening.
The NWS warns of prolonged freezing conditions lasting 48 hours or more, starting Sunday afternoon. While the forecast remains dry, there is a slight chance of wintry precipitation during this cold spell.
Residents should prepare by:
- Protecting outdoor plumbing.
- Ensuring pets and livestock have adequate shelter.
- Dressing in layers for outdoor activities.
