A Wintry Mix Expected Overnight

SAN ANGELO, TX — A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 6 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2025. A wintry mix of rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow is expected. Hazardous travel will be possible due to slick spots on roadways but especially on bridges and overpasses, according to the San Angelo area National Weather Service.

Further north in the Big Country Abilene area, the NWS is forecasting snow.

Tonight, there is a chance of rain showers, possibly mixing with snow after 9 p.m., then gradually ending. It will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 31 degrees F. North to northwest wind will be blowing at 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. While the chance of precipitation is 30%, little or no snow accumulation expected.

Temperatures will rise to 40 degrees F by 3 p.m. Friday and a high of 54 degrees F on Saturday.

Even still, expect cold temperatures  Saturday morning (upper teens to low 20s). Otherwise, lows will generally be in the mid 20s to low 30s each morning for the next several mornings. We'll see a slight warmup during the daylight hours, with highs generally in the low to mid 50s from Saturday through Wednesday.

Much quieter and dry weather is expected from Friday night through the middle of next week. Temperatures will gradually warm as well.

As the upper level low/trough bringing this precipitation moves off to the east by Saturday, dry zonal flow will develop aloft, with southwesterly winds at the surface.

Skies will also clear out, allowing for ample sunshine, and temperatures should warm up
into the upper 40s to mid 50s. On Sunday, as an upper level trough moves east/southeast into the northern plains and Great Lakes regions, a dry cold front will move through Texas. Although temperatures will be cooler than normal Sunday and Monday, they
will still be warmer than today, with highs mainly in the 40s to lower 50s. There is some uncertainty by the middle of next week, but upper level ridging will be possible, which should allow temperatures to continue warming, possibly back into the 60s by
Wednesday.

For pilots, current weather at Mathis Field is 900 overcast and 10 miles visibility. Winds are out of the north 9 knots. Forecast for tomorrow calls for overcast at 2000 feet by 1 p.m. and few clouds overhead by 5 p.m. Friday. Winds will pick up during the daylight hours favoring runway 36 at 340 degrees and 18 knots, gusting to 26 knots.
