Cat Tests Positive for Rabies in Abilene

ABILENE, TX — A domesticated cat in the 6600 block of South 3rd Street tested positive for rabies on Dec. 11, prompting Abilene Animal Services to issue a warning to residents and pet owners in the area.

Authorities are urging caution and emphasizing the importance of annual rabies vaccinations for pets.

Rabies, a deadly virus affecting the central nervous system, is most commonly transmitted through the bite or saliva of an infected animal. Once symptoms appear, the virus is typically untreatable and often fatal. Abilene Animal Services is reminding residents to seek immediate medical care if exposed to the virus.

Unusual animal behavior, such as nocturnal animals active during the day, difficulty moving, or a lack of fear toward humans, can indicate rabies. Wild animals that allow humans to approach them are likely sick or injured and may bite in self-defense.

To minimize exposure risks, Abilene Animal Services advises the following:

• Avoid contact with wild animals, including bats, skunks, and raccoons.
• Keep pets’ rabies vaccinations up to date.
• Prevent pets from roaming freely to reduce the likelihood of exposure.
• Seek veterinary care immediately if a pet is bitten or scratched by a wild animal.
• Contact a physician promptly after potential rabies exposure.
• Report animal bites to local animal control authorities for proper testing or quarantine of the biting animal.
