Harris Brothers Finish 1-2 in Round 9 of National Finals Rodeo

LAS VEGAS, NV — Night after night, San Angelo keeps finding itself in the spotlight at the National Finals Rodeo.

It happened again Friday as Joel Harris won Round 9 of tie-down roping, while his brother Ty finished in a tie for second place.

It’s the fifth time in the last seven nights that a San Angelo cowboy has won the round.

It was the second victory on the sport’s biggest stage for Joel Harris, who is making his first NFR appearance. He clocked a time of 7.2 seconds to win $33,687.

Joel locked up fifth place in the overall standings with season earnings of $255,038.53.

Ty Harris, who tied with Decatur’s Tuf Cooper and Canyon’s Quade Hiatt in 7.5 seconds, earned $20,285.

Ty remains in fourth place in the overall standings with $327,426.63. He’s less than $5,000 behind Montana’s Haven Meged for third, and he even has an outside shot at catching Clovis, New Mexico’s Shad Mayfield for second place.

San Angelo’s other competitor, Dylan Hancock, was 10th Friday in 9.6 seconds. He is still in seventh place in the overall standings with $213,085.60.

As we head into the 10th and final round Saturday, the world title is still up for grabs. Denton’s Riley Webb leads with $380,129.26. He has a more than $23,000 lead over Mayfield.
