SAN ANGELO, TX - The Texas Department of Public Safety is stepping up patrols statewide this Thanksgiving weekend, aiming to curb traffic violations and keep roads safe during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
In 2023, Texas drivers received over 41,000 warnings and citations during the Thanksgiving holiday, including 11,525 for speeding, 1,310 for driving without insurance, and 596 for seat belt violations. Officers also made 36 arrests for driving while intoxicated and 54 felony arrests. Speeding was identified as a leading cause of crashes, with more than 11,000 accidents reported in just one month last November across several counties, according to DPS.
“Thanksgiving is the busiest holiday on the books across the nation,” DPS stated.
DPS urged motorists to consider how their decisions impact not only themselves but their families and communities.
The department will deploy additional troopers on highways throughout the holiday weekend, focusing on violations such as speeding, intoxicated driving, and seat belt compliance. Officials remind drivers to stay alert and avoid distractions to ensure everyone gets home safely.
Authorities are urging Texans to take precautions and make responsible choices. Safe driving can help prevent unnecessary tragedies during the holiday season.
