PHARR, TX — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized nearly $880,000 worth of cocaine concealed in a tractor-trailer hauling broccoli at the Pharr International Bridge over the weekend, officials said.
The discovery was made on Nov. 22 during a routine inspection of a truck entering from Mexico. Using non-intrusive inspection equipment, CBP officers identified irregularities, prompting a physical search. Officers uncovered 28 packages containing approximately 66 pounds of cocaine hidden within the trailer.
“Our frontline CBP officers continue to exercise resolute vigilance, utilize their training, experience, technology, and the end result is this significant seizure of cocaine,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez of the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry.
The drugs have an estimated street value of $880,725, CBP officials said. The agency seized the truck, trailer, and narcotics, and Homeland Security Investigations special agents have launched a criminal investigation.
The Pharr International Bridge is a key trade route connecting the U.S. and Mexico, with officers processing thousands of commercial vehicles daily.
