Photos Reveal Graphic Scene at Downtown San Angelo NYE Murder

SAN ANGELO, TX — The prosecution presented a harrowing case against Ryan Joaquin Renfroe, 34, offering graphic details of how he allegedly shot and killed a man following a road rage incident and an exchange of heated words on Facebook.

Senior Judge Barbara Walther is presiding over the murder trial in the 51st District Court.

Testimony this morning came from several police officers who were among the first to arrive at the crime scene—a dimly lit alleyway on the north side of the Fat Boss Pub, located at 114 S. Chadbourne St.—in the early hours of New Year’s Day 2024. The jury was shown grisly photographs of the victim, Jakob Jones, whom prosecutors claim was fatally shot by Renfroe.

Renfroe, dressed in street clothes and seated beside his defense attorney, listened as prosecutors argued that the fatal shooting stemmed from a road rage altercation that escalated on Facebook and culminated violently in the downtown alleyway near the popular San Angelo bar.

In response, Renfroe's defense claimed the shooting was an act of self-defense, asserting that Renfroe fired his weapon out of fear for his life.

The court admitted surveillance footage from the former Chadbourne Tavern as evidence. Prosecutors indicated the video captured the moment of the shooting. Additional footage from a nearby Methodist Church is also expected to be shown later in the trial.

Stay tuned for updates on this afternoon’s court proceedings, which will be reported later tonight.
