SAN ANGELO, TX — Scammers are impersonating San Angelo police officers and using the names of real officials in a scheme to pressure victims into compliance, according to the San Angelo Police Department.
The fraudulent callers claim to be Sergeant Alan Smith, falsely stating that Federal Judge Matthew Johnson has issued warrants for the recipient’s arrest. They often use personal details, such as the victim’s registered address, to seem credible. To further the ruse, they transfer calls to a supposed “Lieutenant Ed Kading” or arrange fake calls from a “dispatch” non-emergency number.
Key red flags include calls from blocked or unfamiliar numbers, demands for immediate action, and threats of arrest if instructions are not followed.
Police advise residents to protect themselves by:
1. Hanging up immediately if the call seems suspicious.
2. Contacting SAPD directly at (325) 657-4315 to verify any claims.
3. Never sharing personal information or sending money over the phone.
Officials stress that law enforcement will not issue threats or demand immediate action over the phone. Residents are encouraged to share this alert widely to prevent others from falling victim.
