CHRISTOVAL, TX — Christoval High School senior Halle Hughes signed Wednesday to continue her basketball career at Angelo State University.
Hughes, a 5-foot-10 guard, was a TGCA all-state selection last year and the MVP of District 7-2A.
She averaged 18.5 points per game and helped lead the Lady Cougars to a 30-8 record and a spot in the regional semifinals.
Hughes said she grew up watching the Rambelles basketball team play in San Angelo, and now she’ll get to continue her career there.
“I think it’s really cool. I only have one more year left here, and then I get to keep playing, and I’m grateful for that,” Hughes said. “I liked the culture, I really like the coaches and just the facilities and stuff.”
The small town of Christoval has sent numerous athletes to ASU in recent years, including other girls basketball players like Lauren Holt, Halie Hargraves and Graci Jones. Allison Vaughn signed with ASU’s track and field program, while Brayden Wilcox is a running back for the Rams’ football team.
Christoval head coach Brad Blalock said Hughes has moved from shooting guard to point guard this season. He said it has taken her game to another level, and he hopes it does the same for his team.
“Seeing her go from not just a scorer but an all-around player has been really fun to watch,” Blalock said.
All five of Christoval’s starters return from last year’s team, along with two other letterwinners. The other starters are Madyson George (who was also named all-state), Jae Thomason, Jordyn Walker and Kaylin Workman.
After falling two wins short of the state tournament last year, Hughes hopes to help her team make it to San Antonio this season.
“We’re really excited,” Hughes said. “We think we have something to prove. We want more this year.”
Christoval’s girls are currently ranked No. 21 in Class 2A in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches state rankings.
