SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lake View Chiefs will finally kick off play this week in District 3-4A Division I.
The Chiefs are already assured a playoff spot in their four-team district, but a district title could also be within reach.
Lake View (2-5), Big Spring (3-4), Pecos (2-5) and Andrews (1-6) have combined for only eight wins this year.
The district race looks about as wide open as it can get.
Lake View will host Pecos at 7 p.m. Friday at San Angelo Stadium.
“I think it’s going to be a very competitive district, and I think we all have a chance to win a game every week,” Lake View head coach Hector Guevara said. “We’ve just got to take it one game at a time. We know Pecos is going to come ready to play, so we’ve got to be ready, too.”
Pecos quarterback Colt Salgado has thrown for 1,139 yards and nine touchdowns with five interceptions on 79-of-141 passing.
He is one of five players with at least 200 yards in the Eagles’ balanced rushing attack.
The biggest playmaker for Pecos is wide receiver Jesus Navarro, who has 41 catches for 648 yards and eight TDs.
“Defensively, we’ve got to slow them down. We know they’re probably going to score, so we’ve got to do our best to make sure we score more than them,” Guevara said.
Lake View sophomore quarterback Chris Alvizo has been a dual-threat athlete for the Chiefs, helping their offense average just over 30 points per game.
Both of Lake View’s wins have come at home, including a 43-6 victory over Brownfield two weeks ago.
This is the first of back-to-back home games for Lake View, which will host Big Spring on Thursday, Oct. 31, before traveling to Andrews for the regular-season finale Nov. 8.
Lake View is chasing its first district title since 2004.
