SAN ANGELO, TX — The National Weather Service warns of elevated fire weather conditions today across West Central Texas, with afternoon highs reaching the low to mid-90s.
Dry air, breezy winds from the south to southwest at 10-20 mph, and dry fuels contribute to the increased fire threat across the region.
Areas including San Angelo, Brady, and Abilene are expected to reach highs between 94°F and 97°F, well above seasonal averages. These conditions create a dangerous mix of low humidity and gusty winds, raising concerns for fire outbreaks in dry vegetation.
A shift in weather is expected tonight as a strong cold front moves south, bringing much cooler temperatures. Winds will turn northeast, reaching 15-25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph as the front passes through the region. Low temperatures overnight could drop into the mid-40s to mid-50s, offering a respite from the heat.
The cooler temperatures are forecast to continue throughout the week, with highs in the 60s and 70s by Wednesday. San Angelo could see a high of 70°F on Wednesday, with similar cooler temperatures across the region.
Rain chances return Friday as an upper trough and increasing moisture move into the area. Showers and thunderstorms are possible through the weekend, with the highest chance of precipitation—up to 50%—expected in Sweetwater and surrounding areas by Saturday.
Although no significant impacts are forecast from the upcoming rain, residents are urged to remain vigilant with fire safety until conditions improve.
