SAN ANGELO, TX - Angelo State University is hosting a free public art exhibit by sculptor Geoffrey Broderick, an associate professor of art at Abilene Christian University, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.
Titled "Tropological," the exhibit of Broderick's metal sculptures is displayed in the Carr EFA Building's Gallery 193 and will be open for free public viewing on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Nov. 15.
The sculptures in "Tropological" were inspired by the sights and smells Broderick experienced at his second home on South Padre Island and on his travels in various tropical regions of the Caribbean.
"These have inspired me to metaphorically associate sea creatures and tropical landscape into symbols that relate to life experiences and philosophies," Broderick said. "Often these associations relate to highs and lows in the journey of life that I have experienced with my faith. Although they can be very specific for me, I have attempted to present them and title them in a way that could be related to others' experiences."
An ACU faculty member since 1999, Broderick began developing his metal-casting skills at Shidoni Foundry in Santa Fe, N.M. Highlights of his career include having sculptures included in the 2010 "Earthbound" exhibit at the Museum of South Texas and a 2015 international exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, Japan. He also cast 10 sculptures that are included in the permanent "Storybook" outdoor collection in downtown Abilene. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from ACU and a Master of Fine Arts from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
