Friday Night Football Roundup: Grape Creek Impresses With Win Over Coahoma

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — Here's a roundup of high school football highlights from around West Texas in Week 7:

Grape Creek Makes Statement Against Coahoma

Sire Garcia scored three touchdowns to power the Grape Creek Eagles to an eye-opening 34-20 win over Coahoma on Friday.

Coahoma came into the game with a 4-1 record, but it was Grape Creek that played like the favorite down the stretch.

Kollin Votaw’s 8-yard TD run with about a minute left in the third quarter gave Grape Creek the lead for good at 28-20.

After the Eagles’ defense forced a fumble, they put the game away with an 8-yard TD run by Jesse Torres with about two minutes remaining.

Garcia had a pair of TD runs, along with a 5-yard TD catch from Daniel Anchondo, and he added a pair of two-point conversions.

Grape Creek improved to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in District 4-3A Division II. Coahoma fell to 4-2 and 0-1.

Grape Creek will visit Stanton next week, while Coahoma will travel to Wall.

Robert Lee Romps to Win Over Irion County

Brenner Sherwood put together another stellar performance to lead Robert Lee to a 61-12 win over Irion County in their District 8-1A Division opener.

It signals a changing of the guard as Irion County was the back-to-back defending district champ.

Robert Lee will still have to get through contenders like Water Valley and Veribest, however, to earn the title in this district.

Sherwood threw for 181 yards and six TDs on 7-of-14 passing with one interception. He also had 17 carries for 170 yards and two TDs.

Nick Samaniego and Jaxon Tavarez each hauled in two TD passes.

Anthony Landeros forced three fumbles to lead the Steers’ defense.

Robert Lee (5-2 overall, 1-0 in district) will host Paint Rock next week. Irion County (2-5, 0-1), will be off next week before a home game against Paint Rock on Oct. 25.

Sonora Flattens Forsan

Sophomore Aaron Segura thew six touchdown passes to lead Sonora to a stunningly lopsided 52-0 win over Forsan in their District 3-2A Division I opener..

The two teams tied with Ozona for the district title last year.

Segura, who led Sonora to the 7-on-7 state tournament during the summer, has transformed the Broncos’ offense into an aerial threat.

He fired three TD strikes to Kam Aguero — covering 80, 12 and 34 yards — along with TD passes To Dylan Ford, Casen Boggs and Jorge Leija.

Justin Lozano scored the game’s final TD when he returned an interception for a score.

Sonora improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in district with its fourth straight win. Forsan fell to 0-6, 0-1.

Sonora will travel to Ozona next week, while Forsan will host Colorado City.

Reagan County Earns Thursday Win Over Ozona

The Reagan County Owls made a statement with a 44-28 win over Ozona on Thursday in Big Lake.

It was a matchup of 4-1 teams that are both district-title contenders.

Chris Johnson rushed for 134 yards and two TDs on 13 carries to lead Reagan County’s offense.

Quarterback Jarrett Brown rushed for 80 yards and two TDs on 19 carries, and he threw for 112 yards and a TD on 10-of-14 passing.

Kason Brown, the Owls’ standout who has received three NCAA Division I scholarship offers, had three catches for 49 yards and a TD.

Alfredo Hidalgo returned an interception for a TD.

Reagan County improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in District 3-2A Division I. Ozona fell to 4-2 and 0-1.

Reagan County will host Christoval next week, while Ozona will host Sonora.

Brady Holds Off Dublin

Johnny Menefield rushed for 200 yards on 17 carries to lead Brady to a 34-31 win over Dublin in their District 5-3A Division II opener.

Ashton Taylor added 124 yards on 22 carries.

Brady improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in district, while Dublin fell to 0-6 and 0-1.

Brady will visit Eastland next week, while Dublin will travel to Tolar.
