Wall Hawks Lock Down Mason Punchers in Top 10 Battle

MASON, TX — The Wall Hawks football team earned an impressive 28-6 road win over Mason on Friday to start the season.

Wall scored in each quarter to build a 28-0 lead before Mason scored in the final quarter to prevent a shutout.

The Hawks’ defense allowed only nine points per game last year, and they’re off to another incredible start in 2024.

Wall is ranked No. 9 in Class 3A Division II, while Mason is No. 9 in 2A D-I.

Mason edged Wall 14-7 last year.

With the Hawks under a new head coach in Craig Slaughter, and moving to a new spread offense under new quarterback Landon York, there were questions about their adjustment period.

Those questions were answered emphatically by this performance against a strong Mason defense, that gave up 14 points per game last year.

York threw for 148 yards and two touchdowns on 7-of-18 passing with one interception.

As expected, Briggs Jones was the top receiver, and he delivered some big plays with three catches for 102 yards and two TDs.

Wall had only 78 rushing yards. Hagyn Barbee had 11 carries for 37 yards, while Thomas Leanos had 12 carries for 33 yards.

Wall's defense was led by Garren Wiggins with 11 tackles, Brylan White with 10 tackles, and Ethan Michalewicz with 9 tackles.

Wall will make its home debut next week when it hosts Brownwood, ranked No. 7 in Class 4A D-I. Mason will visit Brady.
