HAMILTON, TX — The Winters Blizzards held on for an exciting 28-27 win over Frost on Thursday in the Ice Bowl.
The Polar Bears missed a field goal on the final play of the game.
It was a back-and-forth battle that started with Winters’ Mark Moreno taking a screen pass 78 yards for a touchdown on the first drive of the season.
Frost scored the next two touchdowns to take a 14-6 lead, capped by Mario Porter’s 50-yard TD run.
Winters responded with two scores, including quarterback Diego Rodriguez’s 3-yard TD run with five seconds left in the second quarter for a 20-14 halftime lead.
Moreno’s 19-yard TD run extended Winters’ lead to 28-14 with 5:25 left in the third quarter.
Frost came roaring back, however, and pulled within 28-27 on Porter’s 48-yard run with 9:08 left in the fourth quarter, but the extra point was blocked.
It was an important win for Winters, which started last year 0-8 on the way to a 1-9 record. Now the Blizzards have won two of their last three games.
Frost was 5-5 last season.
Winters was led by Moreno, who had 23 carries for 136 yards and a TD, along with his 78-yard TD catch.
Caleb Rutherford added 21 carries for 121 yards and a TD.
Winters will host Munday next week in its home opener.
