5 Injured, Including Infant, in Major Crash Near Tye

TYE, TX — Five people, including an infant, were injured in a major vehicle crash at about 2:15 a.m. Friday on Interstate 20 west of Abilene, according to a media release from the Tye Police Department.

Two people are in critical condition with serious burns and trauma, according to the release.

A preliminary investigation indicated an 18-wheeler was on the side of the road with a service truck changing a flat tire when a second 18-wheeler collided with the vehicles.

The truck that caused the crash was carrying an 80,000-pound beam for a bridge, and the beam was thrown about 200 yards due to the impact, the release stated.

First responders were still at the scene of the crash more than five hours later.

A head-on collision near the same stretch of road killed two people early Sunday morning.
