Angelo State Grad Osakue Finishes in 8th at Olympics

PARIS, FRANCE — Former Angelo State University athlete Daisy Osakue finished in eighth place in the women's discus throw at the Olympics in Paris on Monday, Aug. 5.

Osakue, representing Italy, matched her throw of 63.11 meters (207 feet, 0.75 inches) from qualifying to move up one spot in the finals.

It was the second consecutive appearance in the Olympic finals for Osakue, who was 12th at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Valerie Allman from the United States defended her gold medal with a throw of 69.50 (228 feet, 2.25 inches).

Competing for the Rambelles from 2017-2021, Osakue holds the top 10 all-time marks in the discus for ASU. She won two national titles in the discus during her time and was an eight-time All-American in the discus and shot put.

Another former ASU athlete who is also competing for Italy, Fatoumata Kabo, will run in the opening round of the 4x400-meter relay Friday, Aug. 9.

Kabo was a two-time NCAA Division II Outdoor National Champion this past season, winning the 400-meter hurdles (57.39) while also helping the Belles to a 4x400-meter relay title with a time of 3:32.88, setting a new program record.

Osakue and Kabo join a small list of current and former ASU athletes to compete in the Olympics. Josh Owusu was fourth in the long jump at the 1972 Munich Games, while Tranel Hawkins was sixth in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
