San Jacinto Elementary School Temporarily Relocates Due to Seismic Damage

SAN ANGELO, TX – Structural damage caused by recent seismic activity has led to the temporary closure of San Jacinto Elementary School, according to school officials.

A compromised load-bearing wall in the main building has raised safety concerns, prompting the decision to close the facility until repairs can be made.

In response, students and staff from grades K-5 will be relocated to Reagan Elementary School for the start of the 2024-2025 school year. Both schools will experience a delayed start, with classes now beginning on Monday, August 19. Transportation will be provided for all affected students.

Students and staff in the Tiny Texans, Early Childhood Special Education (ESCE), and pre-kindergarten programs, which are housed in safe buildings separate from the main structure, will remain on the San Jacinto campus.

“Some things are out of our control, such as earthquakes,” said Superintendent Dr. Christopher Moran. “In this case, it will affect our ability to open the year at San Jacinto Elementary School. However, San Jacinto is far more than bricks and mortar. It is the people and our students whom we love very much and we want to make sure they are safe and well cared for. I have the fullest confidence that Mrs. Beers and her staff will provide our students with everything they need to be successful to begin the year on another campus. Above all, students first!”

School officials are collaborating with structural engineers and emergency services to assess and address the damage.

"The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and we are committed to keeping you informed about the situation at Reagan and San Jacinto Elementary School," the school district stated.

Logistical adjustments have been made to accommodate the relocation:

  • Drop-off and pick-up for San Jacinto students will now take place on the 16th Street side of Reagan Elementary, with the office located at the main entrance off 16th Street.
  • Reagan Elementary’s student drop-off and pick-up will occur on the 17th Street side, with the main office entrance remaining on Volney Street.
