Alvarez Hits for the Cycle as Astros Tie for First in AL West

SEATTLE, WA — The Houston Astros won a pivotal weekend series against one of their AL West rivals, the Seattle Mariners. On Sunday, Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez accomplished something that only nine other players have accomplished in Astros history. The lefty slugger hit for the cycle.

The Astros ended up losing the game 6-4, but Alvarez claimed something that all big leaguers want. Alvarez singled in the 1st inning, hit his 20th homer on the season in the 4th, added that elusive triple to center field in the 6th, and ended his day with a double in the 8th.

Alvarez finished 4-4 on the day, scoring two RBIs and two runs. In the loss, the Astros’ DH proved to be the entire offense.

Last weekend proved fruitful for the Astros (52-47), who are now tied for the lead in the AL West with the Mariners (53-48). Houston traveled to Seattle on Friday for the three-game series. Houston dominated in Friday’s contest 3-0. The Astros followed that up with a come-from-behind victory on Saturday, 4-2. Despite Alvarez’s incredible performance on Sunday, the Astros fell 6-4.
