AUSTIN, TX — Tech mogul Elon Musk announced Tuesday that he will relocate the headquarters of both his social media company, X, and SpaceX to Texas. This decision follows the signing of a new California law by Governor Gavin Newsom.
Musk made the announcement via posts on the social media platform X. He stated that SpaceX will move its headquarters from Hawthorne to Starbase, Texas, while X will relocate from San Francisco to Austin.
“Have had enough of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building,” Musk added in a separate post, referring to issues in the area surrounding X’s headquarters.
Musk cited the new California law, which bans school districts from requiring schools to notify parents if their child asks to change their gender identification, as the “final straw” in his decision.
“I did make it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws of this nature would force families and companies to leave California to protect their children,” Musk wrote on X.
This move is not Musk’s first shift to Texas. In 2021, he relocated the corporate headquarters of his electric car company, Tesla, from Palo Alto to Austin. Despite this, Tesla still maintains a large factory in Fremont, which has expanded since the headquarters moved.
Musk has also previously announced that he moved his private residence from California to Texas.
