SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State men's basketball coach Vinay Patel announced on Tuesday, July 16, the signing of big man Damonze Woods, marking the second transfer addition to the team this summer.
Woods, a 6-foot-7 forward from Odessa College, started his collegiate career at UT Arlington.
Angelo State's Assistant Director of Athletic Communication Nick Rackley spoke to Patel about the addition of Woods to the team.
"Damonze is a wonderful addition to our program," Patel said. "He is a high-motor forward who can impact the game with energy and intensity."
Last season, Woods averaged 4.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game at Odessa College. He shot an impressive 49.6 percent from the field for the Wranglers, who maintained a national ranking throughout the season and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NJCAA National Tournament.
"We have seen Damonze play since he was 16 years old and had a standout career at Amarillo High," Patel said. "He played for one of the best high school coaches in the state, Jason Pillion. Undoubtedly, he will be an instant impact player for our program."
At Amarillo High School, Woods earned 5A All-State selection as a junior and secured District 3-5A First Team and Region 1-5A First Team honors as a senior. He was instrumental in leading the Sandies to back-to-back UIL 5A State Semifinal appearances in his final two seasons.
"Damonze is a team-first guy that will do whatever it takes to help his team win," Patel said. "Odessa College is one of the top junior college programs in the country, and Coach Kris Baumann pushes players to be great on and off the floor. We are excited to get to coach him for the next two years at ASU!"
Woods' arrival is expected to bolster Angelo State's frontcourt, bringing both skill and experience to the Rams as they prepare for the upcoming season.
