SAN ANGELO, Texas — A cold front sweeping through the region overnight has ushered in a significantly cooler air mass across west central Texas. High temperatures, which soared to a scorching 100 degrees in San Angelo and Junction yesterday, are expected to reach only the 70s to near 80 degrees today.
Low clouds blanket much of the area, particularly south of Interstate 20, with forecasters anticipating persistent cloud cover throughout Friday night.
In addition to the cooler temperatures, residents are advised to remain vigilant as isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecasted to develop south of Interstate 20 late this morning into the afternoon. While most storms are not expected to be severe, there's a chance for a few to intensify, potentially producing marginally severe hail up to an inch in diameter or gusty winds nearing 60 mph.
By tonight, the storm activity is anticipated to taper off around 7 or 8 PM, leaving the region under mainly cloudy skies and continued east to northeast winds. Overnight lows are projected to dip into the upper 50s to lower 60s.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday brings a slight chance of morning showers and thunderstorms, followed by increasing chances of showers and possibly thunderstorms by midday. Sunday holds the potential for showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the morning, before transitioning to a chance of afternoon storms. Highs throughout the weekend are expected to range from the low 70s to around 80 degrees.
As the region braces for varying weather conditions, residents are advised to stay informed and prepared for potential changes in the forecast.
