SAN ANGELO, TX — The competition for the 92nd Annual San Angelo Rodeo is officially underway. Cowboys gathered at the San Angelo Coliseum on Tuesday, April 2, for the slack as judges narrow down the field for the first official performance on Friday night.

For those who do not know, the slack is a time other than during the actual rodeo performance when the ‘extra’ contestants compete in the rodeo. There are only around 8-12 slots in each rodeo performance for each event. When more contestants enter the competition than can compete during the official performances, those cowboys and cowgirls compete in the slack.
Those who place well can secure better slots in the official performances later on this week. All the contestants warmed up horses in and around the Coliseum on Tuesday morning to give San Angelo the official rodeo season feeling. Added to the slack, the Carnival could be seen being set up on the fairgrounds in the backdrop of the Coliseum.
The first official performance of the 92nd Annual San Angelo Rodeo kicks off on Friday, April 5. The start time is slated for 7:30 p.m. There will be 12 performances through the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association before the Cinch Shootout, its own rodeo competition, on Saturday, April 20. Rodeo season in San Angelo concludes with the first ever ‘Tejano Day’ on Sunday, April 21.
