FRISCO, TX — Grape Creek High School welcomed back a recently crowned state champion from the Texas State Powerlifting Championships last week. Lady Eagles Ashly Hernandez won the first official unequipped division in the 242 lb weight class and is a 3A State Champion.
Last week, the Championships took place at the Comerica Center in Frisco, TX. At the championships, Hernandez not only took home the gold in her weight class but also set the first Squat, Deadlift, and Total state records in the process. Hernandez hit several impressive weight totals while unequipped. She set the mark at 330 lbs on squat, 125 lbs on bench press, and 370 lbs on deadlift for a total of 825 lbs.
The unequipped division is new to the State Powerlifting competitions this year. Usually, competitors wear bench press shirts and squat suits and wrap their knees before they lift to give themselves every advantage in lifting the heaviest weight. In the unequipped division, none of those “lifting aids” are allowed. A natural consequence of not using equipment is lower lifts. Ashly still managed to near the 1000 lb mark, which is nothing less than impressive.
Check out her three lifts below:
Grape Creek Lady Eagles Ashly Hernandez
- Squat - 330 lbs
- Bench - 125 lbs
- Deadlift - 370 lbs
- Total - 825 lbs
Two fellow members of the Grape Creek Boys Powerlifting team, Budah Schkade and Isaac Silva, also qualified for the State Competition and are set to compete in Frisco on March 23. Congratulations to all the student-athletes who made it to the State Meet and congratulations to Ashly for her historic win.
