County Commissioner Election Hangs by a Thread

SAN ANGELO, TX — The March 5 Republican Primary saw a very close race for Tom Green County Commissioner Precinct 1, and the results are still too close to call.

The race was between Incumbent Ralph Hoelscher and Michelle DeRusso; only two votes separated them.

Hoelscher received 862 votes, while DeRusso fell short with 860.

The race was too close to call, and according to Elections Administrator Vona Hudson, after an election, there are six days that “certain things can happen.”

Provisional voters, those who voted without presenting an ID at the polls, have been given a window to validate their ballots by showing their provisional ID. Furthermore, there are deadlines for various types of mail-in ballots that have yet to be counted.

Those last mail-in votes and provisionals still need to be reviewed.

The ballot board was set to meet at 1 p.m. today, March 13, to process any received materials.

“Once the ballot board has finished that part, then we will print out the report to send them out to the party chairs,” Hudson said, mentioning that party chairs will canvass the results.

Once the votes are canvassed, they become official.

If the board feels it is necessary, the board has two days after the votes are canvassed to call for a recount.

The deadline, according to Hudson, to canvas the votes is Thursday, March 14.

UPDATED: We reached out to the Tom Green County Republican Party Chairman Bruce Burkett for comment. He said that he plans to canvass the results at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the TGC Republican Party office, located at 2525 Johnson St., Suite A.
