FRISCO, TX—The Angelo State Belles traveled to Frisco to play in the 2024 Lone Star Conference Tournament at the Comerica Center. In the quarterfinals, the Belles faced off with the University of Texas Permian Basin at 12 p.m. on Friday, March 8. Faced with an incredibly stalwart defensive performance from UTPB, the Belles had an off-shooting performance and fell 71-51.
The Lady Falcons are a team that Angelo State knew well at this point, as this was the third game in a row that these two teams played each other. UTPB took advantage of some early turnovers to build a solid lead through the first two quarters and led Angelo State 33-22 at the half.
UTPB started the game strong with a 6-0 run before the Belles battled back. Behind baskets from Tayjanna Mcghee-Pleasant, Madison Honea, and Landry Morrow, ASU tied the score before a free throw from Sawyer gave the Belles the lead. Unfortunately, this would be the only lead Angelo State had in the entire game.

A combination of excellent defense from UTPB and an off-shooting performance from the Belles allowed the Lady Falcons to build a steadily increasing lead. UTPB led 33-22 at the half.
Angelo State continued to battle in the second half, but it felt like UTPB couldn’t miss. Meanwhile, the Belles struggled to make shots from behind the arc. ASU went 3/19 from three for the contest. The Lady Falcons ballooned their lead to as much as 25 before the game ended. The Belles went on a run to make the final score closer but fell in the end, 71-51.

Angelo State shot 35% overall from the field, and like the Rams on Thursday night, they never really found the Belles’ usual groove.
Mcghee-Pleasant led the Rambelles in scoring on the day with 13 points, followed by Madison Honea with 11 points and Sawyer Lloyd with 10 points.
