Cowboys Exercise Fifth-Year Option on All-Pro

ARLINGTON— The Cowboys have exercised a fifth-year option on their All-Pro defensive playmaker.

The Dallas Cowboys have placed the fifth-year option on Micah Parsons as included in his rookie contract. This should not be a surprise as all Parsons has done since entering the NFL has dominate on the Cowboy’s defense. With Parsons going into his fourth year in the league under his rookie contract, this gives the Cowboys another year to get a long-term deal done.

One potential snag is that Parsons has been designated an edge rusher and not a linebacker, which saves the Cowboys some money and Parsons would lose about $2.7 million. Coming out of Penn State, Parsons was considered a linebacker but has played all over the field for the Cowboys.

Fans can expect Parsons to command a contract somewhere in the $35 million a year range when it comes his time to negotiate.

As for the Cowboys, they have a lot of work to do this offseason. Quarterback Dak Prescott needs to be extended as his cap number is close to $60 million and wide receiver Ceedee Lamb just turned in a monster year for the Cowboys and his contract is coming up shortly as well.

Another thing that hurts the Cowboys is their offensive line, especially at offensive tackle, as long-time left tackle, Tyron Smith, is not expected to return to the team next season. That leaves young, late round and free agent options already on the team. Expect them to address this in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
