SAN ANGELO, TX — Numerous animals of all types desperately need a new home, sitting in animal shelters and rescues all over the country and right here in San Angelo.
One heart-warming example is a 7-week-old kitten named Tommy, paralyzed by a BB gun pellet, who continues to showcase resilience and playfulness despite his challenges.
Another hopeful prospect is Randy, the Shepard mix, a 2-year-old pup who was one of nine puppies from a recent litter at the local animal rescue Cassie's Place that has yet to be adopted.
In December, the Esther Neonatal Kitten Alliance (ENKA) welcomed Tommy, who was discovered unable to use his back legs. An X-ray revealed a BB gun pellet lodged in his back, indicating deliberate harm.
A recent visit to a neurologist showed some twitching in Tommy's toes, prompting further investigation. However, the neurologist found no evidence of brain signals reaching his back legs and attributed the twitching to a nerve reaction. It was concluded that Tommy might never regain mobility in his hind legs.
Currently living in a foster home, Tommy utilizes a specially designed "drag bag" that enables him to move around. He engages in playful activities with other foster kittens and navigates freely in his unique way.

ENKA is actively addressing Tommy's stomach issues and is planning to have him neutered. Despite the challenges, the goal is to make him available for adoption by early March.
Tommy will require lifelong special care, including a home without stairs and a caregiver willing to change his diaper multiple times a day.
ENKA, a nonprofit organization based in North Carolina, focuses on providing care to newborn and medically challenged kittens, aiming to allow them to thrive despite their health conditions.
Cassie’s Place is another rescue that does its part to rehab animals and find them forever homes locally. The locally-owned nonprofit was created to serve the abused and forgotten animals of Tom Green County and surrounding areas.
Cassie's Place's purpose is to rescue, rehab, and re-home. For over seven years, they have taken in and cared for all types of animals, including cats, dogs, goats, lizards, and more, all while finding appropriate homes for them.
Autumn is an employee and representative of Cassie's Place who brought Randy into the San Angelo LIVE! studio to interview in hopes of adopting him out to a local home.
