San Angelo Woman Indicted for Having a Purse Full of Meth

 

SAN ANGELO— A San Angelo woman has been indicted for making and distributing methamphetamine.

Shawntae Hughes has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for the Manufacture and Delivery of Methamphetamine >=4G<200G.

According to court documents, on November 12, 2023, a blue Chevrolet Impala had failed to signal when making a turn off of South Abe Street into the Denny’s Restaurant parking lot, which officers proceeded to stop the vehicle. When the officer walked up to the car, a strong smell of marijuana was coming from inside. The two occupants, one of which was identified as the defendant, Hughes, were asked to exit the vehicle.

During the probable cause search a blue purse was found on the passenger side floorboard where Hughes was sitting. Inside this purse was Hughes’ ID, social security card, a glass pipe containing a white crystal-like substance, a 9mm SCCY handgun with the serial number scratched off, a small red and black zip-up bag containing five small jeweler bags that also contained a white crystal substance, and a small scale that was labeled “Mr. Scales”. Marijuana was also found in a glass container along with a marijuana pipe, and more jeweler bags.

The bags with the white crystal substance tested positive for methamphetamine and together weighed 9.84 grams. Hughes was placed under arrest for Manufacture and Delivery of a Controlled Substance, Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon, and Possession of Marijuana <2oz.

She was booked into the Tom Green County Jail on November 12, 2023, and was released the same day. She was only indicted on the Manufacture and Delivery charge.

Hughes next has an initial pre-trial currently set for March 5, 2024, with a possible jury trial set for July 15, 2024.
