An Angelo State University student soon to begin his sophomore year was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting early this morning.
According to the Arlington Police Department, officers were dispatched to a burglary call at Classic Buick GMC in the 1400 block of E. Interstate 20 frontage road at about 1 a.m., Friday, Aug. 7, 2015.
Upon arrival at the car dealership, officers found that a vehicle had been driven through the front of the building. Officers established a perimeter and approached the suspect inside. As officers confronted the suspect, there was an altercation during which at least one officer discharged his weapon. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have determined that the suspect had no weapon.
The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Christian Taylor, was a red-shirted freshman on the 2014 Angelo State University football team and planned to start again this year on the team, ASU spokeswoman Rebekah Brackin said. The defensive back was 5’9” and weighed 180 pounds, according to the Angelo State University athletics website. He graduated from Mansfield Summit High School in the DFW area. Mansfield is near Arlington.
Independent criminal and administrative investigations will be conducted. The criminal investigation focuses on the use of deadly force. The administrative investigation will review the incident to determine if the officer’s actions were in compliance with the department’s policies and procedures.
The department does not presently use body worn cameras, but is in the process of implementing a pilot program for body worn camera use. Surveillance video exists at the car dealership. The original 911 call was made from a security company that was observing the suspect on camera outside the business. We are looking at all available video from outside and inside the location to obtain as much information as possible. At this time, investigators have not located any video capturing the shooting.

Officer Miller has been in field training and working under the supervision of a Police Training Officer since graduating from the Police Academy in March 2015. At this time he has no commendation or discipline history with the department. Prior to joining APD, Officer Miller had no previous police experience. He will be placed on administrative leave as is routine in deadly force incidents. (Left, Arlington (TX) Police Officer Brad Miller. (Contributed/APD))
"The preservation of life and safety is our highest priority. The Arlington Police Department is saddened by this loss of life and will provide the community a clear and transparent investigation," an Arlington Police Department press release stated.

Why do they need to say that the suspect had no weapon at this point. This just ask for Al Sharpton and others of his sort to jump on it. Perhaps this guy was trying to take the officers weapon, which could be the situation since there was an altercation. Just thinking more information is needed before stating something inflammatory.

PermalinkLast I checked, burglary of a building doesn't carry a death sentence. As of today, 705 US citizens have been killed by police in 2015 -- 124 in July. I'm sure they all deserved to die.

PermalinkYep .... Let's make sure the brush you are using is extra wide for painting that picture.....
You have no idea just like I have no idea what happened . As far as we know the guy tried to grab his gun or was pounding on another officers head with his fist.
I always find it funny that people are always surprised when bad things happen to those making dumb decisions in life. Remember the guy breaking in had the ability for nothing like this to ever happen by not breaking in to the building.

PermalinkNope, burglary does not automatically mean a death sentence. But viciously attacking one of many men all of whom had guns trained on you probably will result in a death sentence. Normal people prefer to call it natural selection or thinning out the herd. You know, the really stupid ones get eliminated one way or another. If not suicide by cop, then some other method like overdose or slamming their car into a post.

PermalinkWe will not know what occurred until a full result of an investigation is accomplished. Yet we have posts that already justified the killing of a human being. How pathetic.

PermalinkYou just crashed your car through the front of a business... you are SURROUNDED BY COPS all with weapons drawn. In order to survive. You
A) comply with police orders. Live to see another day.
O R
B) fight with rhe first cop you can reach. Take a chance that he/she wont shoot you.
I'm thinking the answer almost ALWAYS HAS TO BE A)!
UNLESS you're doing a SUICIDE BY COP!

PermalinkAs unfortunate as the death of this young man is, reason states that one's likelihood of suffering serious misfortune can be greatly reduced by one's not doing really stupid things and then reacting inappropriately when law enforcement types come on the scene.
Did this young man deserve to die? In all likelihood not. Did his actions greatly contribute to his demise? Probably so. Who bears the greater responsibility here? My vote is he does.

PermalinkThe officer involved in the fatal shooting of Christian Taylor has been terminated, Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson said Tuesday. Johnson cited several examples of poor judgement in the incident as reasons for Officer Brad Miller’s termination. He said he made the decision after receiving a briefing from homicide investigators Tuesday morning and the decision was his alone.
