The filing period will close on Friday, Feb. 16, at 5 p.m.

Those interested in running can submit an application to the city clerk’s office at 72 W College, and applications are available online at cosatx.us. Alternatively, interested individuals can pick up a copy from the city clerk’s office.

The last day to register to vote is April 4th.

Thus far, three candidates have announced candidacy for police chief.

The three are, San Angelo Police Officer Sgt. Travis Griffith, San Angelo Police Officer Chris Cimino, and Mike Hernandez.

One of these three is to replace outgoing Chief Frank Carter who has announced he is not seeking reelection.

A central theme of Hernandez's campaign is the commitment to a positive and fair race.

In his address, Hernandez emphasized the importance of the 'service' aspect in the police motto, "to Protect and Serve." He pledged to instill pride within the department through enhanced discipline and training. "Pride fosters improved recruitment and retention," Hernandez stated.

It has been previously reported that Griffith is running on accountability, safety, and transparency.

"Travis Griffith is a dedicated law enforcement professional who is deeply committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community," a news release from his campaign stated. "With his extensive experience, strong leadership skills, and clear vision, he is the ideal candidate for the role of Chief of Police."

According to the San Angelo Police Department website, Cimino joined the San Angelo Police Department in 2005 and has served as a patrol officer, narcotics detective, CID detective, a member of the Crisis Negotiations Team, a Patrol Sergeant, and a K-9 Sergeant. Cimino is currently the Patrol Lieutenant for Charles and Delta Patrol companies, the Lake Division, and the K-9 Unit.

Cimino is also the Commander of the San Angelo Police Department’s Anti-Riot Company.
