CHRISTOVAL, TX — The Christoval Cougars and the Sonora Broncos matched up in Christoval where the Cougars had to grind out a hard-fought win, 50-49.
The Cougars survived with a one-point victory over the Sonora Broncos last night and remained undefeated in district play. The Broncos had big second and fourth quarters to pull them within striking distance.
Going into the half, Cougars were up 29-27. Sonora’s Wyatt Killough had a big half, making five three-point shots and a free throw for 16 points. Christoval’s Camdin Balderas led the Cougars in the first half with 10 points followed by big man Bruce Cooper with six.
After halftime, the Cougars built up a lead that dissolved away when the Broncos stampeded back to tie the game up at 46-46 with about 1:36 left to play. The Cougars four-point fourth quarter gave the Cougars 50 points, but Sonora had a 15-point fourth quarter, and the ball in the last three seconds. Sonora missed a three with time expiring to fall to Christoval, 50-49.
“We defiantly have the potential to be better than we were last year,” Christoval Head Basketball Coach Matt Lowry said, “Right now we’re young and inexperienced. I have two seniors and four sophomores over there. But the potential is up there.”
