Drive-By Shooting Injures Infant

MESQUITE, TX — A toddler was hospitalized on New Year’s Eve after what authorities described as a drive-by shooting in Mesquite, according to police officials.

Around 7 p.m. on Sunday, officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Springwood Drive, located just south of the intersection of Faithon P. Lucas Sr. Boulevard and Berry Road in Mesquite, responding to a shooting call, as per police reports.

Simultaneously, another individual in the vicinity reported a shooting incident, as stated by Brandon Ricketts, a spokesman for the Mesquite Police Department.

Upon arrival, responding officers discovered a 1-year-old child with a "minor wound" to the head and a man with a "minor cut" on his neck. Investigators believe the incident involved a drive-by shooting and occurred while the toddler and the man, confirmed by Ricketts as the child's father, were inside a residence.

Ricketts described the injuries as "grazing." Subsequently, the toddler was transported to a hospital following the shooting. Police confirmed that none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

During the investigation, officers also encountered a man in the area who reported that his vehicle had been shot at while he was inside. However, investigators do not believe the man was struck by gunfire.

Authorities obtained surveillance footage from the area revealing a "vehicle driving down the street" before an individual exited the vehicle and began shooting, according to police statements.

Investigators recovered a total of nine shell casings from the area, stated Ricketts. As of Tuesday, the specific target and motive behind the shooting remained unclear.
