Winter Fire Safety: Protecting Your Home from Heating Hazards

SAN ANGELO, TX - As winter settles in, the San Angelo Fire Department issued a crucial reminder that the season's cold weather brings an increased risk of home fires, with heating equipment identified as one of the primary culprits.

According to information from the National Fire Protection Association, a significant portion of home heating equipment fires is reported during the months of December, January, and February.

To mitigate these risks, the NFPA emphasizes the importance of maintaining a three-foot safety zone around heating equipment such as furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, and portable space heaters.

Key safety precautions recommended by the NFPA include:

  • Establishing a "Kid-free zone": Maintain a three-foot radius around open fires and space heaters to ensure the safety of children.
  • Avoiding unconventional heating methods: Never use an oven as a source of heat for your home.
  • Professional installation: Have qualified professionals install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters, or central heating systems to ensure proper setup and reduce risks.
  • Regular maintenance: Schedule annual cleaning and inspections of heating equipment and chimneys by qualified professionals to identify and address potential hazards.
  • Vigilant portable heater use: Turn off portable heaters when leaving the room or going to bed to prevent accidents and conserve energy.
  • Using the right fuel: Always use the fuel specified by the manufacturer for fuel-burning space heaters to avoid combustion issues.
  • Fireplace safety: Ensure the fireplace is equipped with a sturdy screen to prevent sparks from entering the room. Dispose of ashes in a metal container, keeping it at a safe distance from your home.
  • Smoke alarm maintenance: Test smoke alarms monthly to guarantee functionality and enhance early detection in case of a fire.
  • Carbon monoxide awareness: Install and maintain carbon monoxide alarms to mitigate the risk of poisoning. If there's a gas odor from a heater, refrain from lighting it, evacuate immediately, and contact the local fire department or gas company.

By adhering to these safety measures, residents of San Angelo can significantly reduce the risk of home fires during the winter months. Stay warm and secure by prioritizing heating safety throughout the season.
