SAN ANGELO, TX - The Texas Department of Public Safety has kicked off its annual holiday enforcement initiative, reminding all Texans to prioritize safety as they travel during this festive season.
The initiative, which began on December 1, will continue through January 1, with increased law enforcement presence on the state's roadways.
As part of the enforcement effort, DPS Troopers will be out in higher numbers to ensure holiday traffic safety.
In line with the agency's commitment to public well-being, the DPS urges motorists to play an active role in fostering safer road conditions.
Key Safety Tips for Holiday Travelers
1. Don't Drink and Drive: Motorists are strongly advised to make alternative plans if consuming alcohol. The DPS emphasizes the importance of responsible decision-making to prevent impaired driving incidents.
2. Move Over or Slow Down: Exercise caution and adhere to the law by moving over or slowing down when passing police, fire, EMS, TxDOT vehicles, and tow trucks stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated.
3. Buckle Up: Ensure that everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seatbelt, as it is a legal requirement for a safer journey.
4. Slow Down in Challenging Conditions: Exercise caution and reduce speed, especially in adverse weather conditions, heavy traffic, unfamiliar areas, or construction zones.
5. Drive Defensively: Recognize the potential challenges of holiday travel and adopt a defensive driving approach to mitigate risks.
6. Eliminate Distractions: Stay focused on the road by avoiding distractions, including the use of mobile devices.
