Gunman Shot by Officers in Coleman County Identified

COLEMAN, TX – The Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers released then name of the suspect involved in the officer involved shooting that occurred on Christmas Day, 2023 on US Highway 84 north of Coleman.  The suspect is deceased and was identified as Jose Martin Hernandez Jr, 43 years of age, male from Midland, Texas.

As we reported Tuesday, on Christmas Day, December 25, 2023, the Coleman County Sheriff’s Department, with assistance from Coleman Police Department officers, engaged in a pursuit stemming from a report of suspicious activity in southern Coleman County, where a firearm had been brandished. The suspect fled the initial scene, prompting a pursuit that traversed through the City of Coleman.

The pursuit culminated in the apprehension of the suspect on US Highway 84, several miles north of Coleman city limits. Responding officers discharged their weapons in response to a perceived threat, resulting in the suspect being struck. Emergency medical treatment was administered to the suspect, who was then airlifted from the scene for further medical attention.
