Will the Geminids Meteor Shower be Visible in San Angelo?

SAN ANGELO, TX – Christmas lights won’t be the only thing lighting the skies over the next few days.

The Geminids meteor shower, which peaks during mid-December each year, is considered to be one of the best and most reliable annual meteor showers, according to NASA. 

The shower will illuminate the night sky from Wednesday, Dec. 13, through Saturday, Dec. 23.

During its peak, 120 Geminid meteors can be seen per hour under perfect conditions. The Geminids are bright and fast meteors and tend to be yellow in color, NASA stated.

Regrettably, potential viewers in San Angelo must contend with weather challenges. According to weather.gov, there is a chance of showers before 9 p.m., followed by a possibility of showers and thunderstorms between 9 p.m. and midnight, and the likelihood of showers, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms, after midnight. 

NASA also stated that the best time for meteor watching is after midnight and before sunrise.

For the most fulfilling experience, NASA recommends lying flat on your back with your feet facing south and looking up. Patience is key, as it may take up to half an hour for your eyes to adjust to the darkness before meteors become visible.

To optimize the viewing experience, NASA advises finding an area far from city lights and streetlights. 

It's recommended to come prepared for winter temperatures, equipped with a sleeping bag, blanket, or lawn chair. 

NASA stated that after 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adjust, revealing the mesmerizing celestial show that will last until dawn.
