Rear-Ended at High Speed: Family's Narrow Escape on US 67

SAN ANGELO, TX — A family's evening drive turned perilous when their vehicle was rear-ended on US 67, early Saturday evening. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. near the Douglas Loop on the northbound side of the highway.

At the scene, a red Kia exhibited significant front-end damage, while the rear of a Pontiac Vibe, carrying a mother and her three daughters, was notably compressed. The daughters, who appeared to be of middle school age, were in the Vibe during the collision. Tragically, one daughter, seated in the back of the Vibe, sustained a mild concussion and was promptly transported to Shannon Medical Center. The driver of the Kia, who was alone in the vehicle, also required emergency room care.

Witness accounts suggest that the Vibe was attempting to join US 67 from a private driveway but failed to adequately yield to the oncoming Kia. Fortuitously, the Vibe had almost completed its turn to face eastward when the Kia struck its rear, a factor that potentially reduced the severity of the impact. The family in the Vibe believes that the spare tire in their vehicle played a crucial role in absorbing the collision's force, possibly saving their young daughter's life.

The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation at the crash site. Conditions were clear with a dry roadway, although it was after sunset when the accident occurred. Following the investigation, authorities issued a citation to the driver of the Vibe.
