Cowboys' Head Coach Promises Swift Return After Appendicitis Surgery

FRISCO, TX — Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy will undergo surgery on Wednesday. The Cowboys said that team doctors diagnosed McCarthy with an acute case of appendicitis on Wednesday morning.

The team announced that McCarthy felt lower abdominal pain on Wednesday morning and reported to the medical staff before he headed to the hospital. McCarthy is expected to undergo surgery and be released from the hospital later on Wednesday night. He said that he fully expects to coach in the Cowboys’ pivotal game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn commented on McCarthy’s condition and status before Sunday night’s game.

“You really think that tough Irishman is going to miss this game?" Quinn said Wednesday. "We're certainly anticipating Mike being back for the game. We'll hold it down for practices. Knowing him, he'll be online tonight wanting to go through red zone and third down and everything else. We expect him to be rocking by game day."

"We're definitely praying for him to get back healthy as soon as possible," Dallas Cowboys All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons said. "He knows we're getting ready, and we'll be ready. … Once the meetings started, Bones alerted us to what's going on, but we all go through something in life, and being able to have a squad behind you that's gonna prepare and make things flow as usual, that's what you want, and that's what we have in our guys.

The Cowboys’ coaching staff will conduct practice for the Cowboys in McCarthy’s absence as the team continues to prepare for the Eagles. Philadelphia has not beaten Dallas in Arlington in five seasons. Dallas rolls into December after playing in back-to-back Thursday games that resulted in dominant Cowboys victories. Dak Prescott and the rest of the offense lead the league in scoring average (32.3 points per game) and look to continue that trend on Sunday.

Dallas currently holds the 5th seed in the NFC Playoffs but can tie the Eagles for first place in the NFC East with a win on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday, December 10, at 7:20 p.m.
