JACKSONVILLE, FL — The Dallas Cowboys recently put forth their nominee for 2023’s Walter Payton Man of the Year. On Monday Night Football, Hall of Fame and Super Bowl Champion Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Troy Aikman announced that Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence will be the Cowboys’ nominee in 2023.
Dak Prescott, last year's award winner, surprised Lawrence with the team's announcement while doing charity work earlier this year. Watch the video below:
The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award is the NFL’s most prestigious honor. It acknowledges NFL players who excel on the field and demonstrate a passion for creating a lasting positive impact in their communities.
If Lawrence wins the award, he will be the fifth Dallas Cowboy to win. Roger Staubach won in 1978, Aikman won in 1997, Jason Witten won in 2012, and Dak Prescott won last season. Lawrence will be the first defensive player recognized since 2019.
Lawrence, 31, is integral to Dan Quinn’s defensive scheme. He continues to be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks with his relentless pass rush and is a force in the run game. However, the Walter Payton Man of the Year award is about what players accomplish on Sundays and off the field in their communities.
Lawrence is an active member of the DFW community. He has made an impact by serving through nonprofits. Lawrence has dedicated time to making school appearances, story times with kids, and attending the Boys & Girls Club of Collin County.
All 32 NFL teams’ nominees were announced on Tuesday, December 5. Fans can vote for their favorite player HERE. The Dallas Cowboys host a pivotal matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
