Tow Truck Driver Arrested for Manslaughter

DALLAS - A routine towing operation in Dallas took a devastating turn, resulting in the death of 67-year-old James Smith and leading to the arrest of 25-year-old tow truck driver Roberto Padilla.

A major accident occurred on Dec. 3, 2023, at around 3:20 a.m., prompting Dallas Police Officers to respond to a distress call in the 10000 block of Shoreview Road.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers were confronted with a grim discovery—67-year-old James Smith was found lying in the parking lot.

The preliminary investigation unveiled a series of events that culminated in this tragic incident.

According to the authorities, Smith's involvement began when his vehicle was in the process of being towed from the parking lot.

Smith reportedly jumped onto the driver's side of the tow truck during the towing operation.

In a twist of fate, the subsequent investigation revealed that Smith somehow fell from the truck and was fatally run over.

Emergency responders rushed Smith to a local hospital, where, despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.

The tow truck driver was identified as 25-year-old Roberto Padilla.

Located at the Dallas Auto Pound, Padilla now faces serious legal consequences.

Authorities have charged him with Manslaughter, and he has been taken into custody at the Dallas County Jail pending further legal proceedings.

The investigation is ongoing and documented under case number 214846-2023.
