SAN ANGELO, TX — The Post Season Awards for District 2-6A Football were announced recently, and several Central Bobcats took home honors. Topping that list was a first-year starter for the ‘Cats, Christian English. Several other Bobcats made the 1st, 2nd, and Honorable mention teams.
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR - CHRISTIAN ENGLISH
Christian English, a junior, made his first start for the Bobcats in 2023 in Week 1 against Kileen Shoemaker. In that game, English looked full of nerves and made a couple of mental mistakes towards the end of the game that he described as pivotal in the ‘Cats first loss. Despite his harsh self-criticism, English played well throughout and composed a quiet but nice stat line. He threw two interceptions in that game. English said in a post-game interview that he had to be better. He did get better. He wouldn’t throw another interception until the end of the season.
His athletic ability was displayed early and often in the season, and as the ‘Cats progressed through district play, he was the driving force behind the offense. Central had several talented players on the offensive side of the ball this season, most made this list, but without English's big play-making ability, the ‘Cats' explosiveness would have been limited.
English finished the season with 2559 yards with 228 completions on 377 attempts. His 60% completion percentage was an admirable stat line. He threw for 18 touchdowns on the year and only three interceptions. English was also a monster in the ground game, accumulating 1047 yards and 17 touchdowns on 104 attempts. The young man was the only one on the team to average over 100 yards a game.
Despite the Bobcats’ final 1-9 record, English proved that he can play with anyone on the 6A level and all Central fans should be excited at what this young man can bring to the table in his senior season.
