SAN ANGELO, TX – A San Angelo man faces serious charges after crashing his truck into another vehicle, causing serious injuries to a couple over the weekend.
Zachary Clark, 31, was arrested for Intoxication Assault with a Vehicle Causing Serious Bodily Injury.
According to court records, on November 18, 2023, at 11:20 p.m., a San Angelo police officer driving on South Bryant Boulevard heard a loud noise behind him. Upon checking the rearview mirror, the officer spotted a vehicle at the intersection of South Bryant Boulevard and South Jackson Street, appearing to have been struck.
Moments later, the officer observed a speeding truck passing and veering off the road, coming to a stop in a nearby field south of Permian Drive. Approaching the driver, Clark, the officer noticed bleeding from Clark's head.
Clark exhibited slurred speech, attributed to a stuttering issue, and moved slowly with heavy steps, likely due to the head injury. The officer detected alcohol on Clark's breath, and Clark admitted to consuming a tall Crown Royal mixed with water at Fuzzy’s Taco about 30 minutes before the collision.
Clark claimed the crash occurred after suddenly spotting brake lights. However, investigation revealed that the vehicle he collided with, which had been behind him at the intersection, did not apply brakes, had a green light, and was traveling around 50 mph. Damage analysis showed Clark's truck had left its lane, impacting the other vehicle on its right rear side while his truck incurred damage on the left front side.
Field sobriety tests were not conducted as Clark was taken to the hospital for his head injury. The driver of the other vehicle sustained a fractured back bone, while the passenger suffered a c-spine fracture.
Clark was arrested on November 19, 2023, for Intoxication Assault with a Vehicle Causing Serious Bodily Injury and released the same day on a $15,000 bond from the Tom Green County Jail.
