SAN ANGELO, TX — A member of the Central Bobcats golf team recently signed his papers to play at the next level. Colin Leonard, a senior at Central High School, signed to play golf for Abilene Christian University last Wednesday at the Bentwood Country Club.
Leonard is in the midst of his senior year and has accumulated several accolades during his time at Central. Last season, the young golfer was recognized for his performance with a First Team All-District, Region, and State nods. Leonard also qualified for the state tournament last May. In 2022, he was the 2022 TAPPS State Champion while he attended and played for the Cornerstone Christian Golf Team.
According to acusports.com, ACU Golf Head Coach Tom Shaw had nothing but good things to say about the young man.
“ACU Golf signed a big-time player today in Colin Leonard," Shaw said. "He is one the fastest rising players in Texas and is just scratching the surface of the kind of player he can become.”
“We love to keep talented West Texas players in Abilene, and Colin Leonard is No. 1 on that list. He will be a household name at ACU for the next four years. Colin is the whole package - a skilled golfer, an excellent student, and a young man of outstanding character. We couldn't be more excited about this signing. Welcome to ACU Men's Golf, Colin."
While the news of Colin’s future is exciting, Central's team captain still has his senior season to play. In fact, he placed first at the Bill Wallace Memorial at the Diamondback and Shady Oakes in Abilene on November 3-4. Leonard shot a 68 on November 3 and a 72 on November 4 to win the tournament.
