SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State Rams played their final regular season game at home on Saturday night, November 11, against Western Oregon. Takeaways set up short touchdown drives, and a kickoff return for a touchdown pushed the Rams to win their regular season finale 31-13.
1st Half
Angelo State struck first with 7:21 remaining in the 1st quarter. Gerald Gardner hit Jaden Jones for a 9-yard touchdown pass to cap off a 9-play, 67-yard drive to lead 7-0. Western Oregon took advantage of a short field in the 2nd quarter when they tied the game at 7-7 with a touchdown of their own. Angelo State responded with a 29-yard pass from Gardner to Kyle Bradford in the end zone to retake the lead late in the first half. Western Oregon kicked a field goal as the first half expired, and the Rams headed to the locker room with a 14-10 lead at the break.
2nd Half
Angelo State took over the football game in the 2nd half. Kyle Bradford kickstarted the Rams with his second touchdown when he returned the 2nd half kickoff back 98 yards to the house. After a Western Oregon field goal, Andrew Pitts picked off the Wolves on two straight possessions. The first set Angelo State up for a 45-yard field goal from Bradley Larson. The second handed the Rams the ball at Western Oregon’s 5-yard line. Backup quarterback Chad Pharies drove the football into the end zone for the score.
Angelo State dominated the 2nd half to win 31-13.
STATS
- Gerald Gardner finished with 20 completions for 164 yards and two touchdowns.
- Brayden Wilcox led the Rams on the ground with 25 yards on seven attempts.
- Kyle Bradford hauled in four catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. Bradford also had a 98-yard kick return touchdown.
- The Rams’ defense had three takeaways, all interceptions. Andrew Pitts had two interceptions, and Josh Booker-Brown had one.
The Angelo State Rams finish the 2023 regular season with a 7-3 overall record (6-2 LSC). The Rams’ fate will be decided in the 2023 NCAA Division II Football Selection Show on Sunday, November 14, at 5 p.m. The show can be watched on NCAA.com. The Rams sat in 8th place in the latest Super Regional rankings. Only the top seven teams from each Super Region make the postseason.
